Nigella Seed
On her tour of the spice souk in Dubai, Arva introduced Rachel to the nigella seed - nigella sativa or black cumin as it is also known.
This little seed has traditionally been revered for its health benefits with some claiming it can cure anything but death! The seeds are said to help reduce blood pressure, clean and tone the liver, reduce fluid retention, support healthy digestion, stimulate the appetite and more.
Whatever their health properties, they also taste delicious! The seeds are commonly used as a spice in Indian and Middle eastern cuisines and have an almost bitter taste, a combination of onions, black pepper and oregano.
If you want to start simple, try them sprinkled over a salad.
You can find the them in your supermarket, spice shop or health food store under the many names they are known: Nigella seeds, Black Cumin, black caraway, and roman coriander!
